Located on the rocky eastern shore of Cliff Island, and only a short walk from the last stop on the Casco Bay Lines ferry route, this seasonal cottage boasts both forest charm and ocean views. Perfectly situated on the edge of the woods, this home lies so close to the shore that you can hear pebbles rolling out with the tide.
Our clients had just closed on the property when they reached out to us to transform and expand the existing rustic camp into an island retreat that would comfortably accommodate their family. Due to the extent of the renovation, two-thirds of the structure had to be completely rebuilt and elevated on concrete piers to comply with current flood-zone requirements.
Our new design took full advantage of the 30 percent expansion limit by electing to build up rather than out. By expanding upward, we were able to create three additional small bedrooms and feature taller ceilings throughout the first floor. While the exposed rafters and V-match pine on the ceilings maintain the rustic charm of the original camp, modern fixtures and finishes add a contemporary level of comfort. An expanse of windows wraps around the cottage, showcasing an awe-inspiring view from every room, including views of the ocean through the cottage on the approach from the narrow camp road.
A breath of fresh air, this home is a sight to be seen—a true Maine classic.
