An internationally renowned musician sought to replace an existing garage at their Cape Elizabeth home with a music studio complete with excellent acoustics, natural light and versatile spaces for practicing and relaxing.
Due to its location, the existing unused one-car garage was grandfathered, making it possible to tear it down and build a new structure close to the existing road. The existing foundation was re-used and a contemporary, simple structure with vertical siding and a metal roof was designed. The envelope of the building is well insulated to create a comfortable space. At the time, new to market, Marvin skylights were installed to allow for natural light and architecturally line up with the windows on the walls of the building. A loft with built-ins for storage, accessed by a rolling library ladder, was created over the bathroom and entry. Collaboration with the interior designer was important when choosing rugs and furniture of different textiles to support acoustic needs. A large sliding door leads out to a small patio to take breaks from practicing. Design challenges of this project included creating ample space for practicing music and relaxing in the confines of a small existing footprint. The clients also wanted the new structure to blend in with the existing home behind it.
This Cape Elizabeth music studio conversion created a flexible, high-functioning space tailored to the needs of a professional musician. The design focuses on delivering excellent acoustics, ample room for creative work, and comfortable areas for relaxation and socializing, all within a compact footprint.
